It has come to light today that a US Dad and Daughter team based in Florida have used a fake investment scheme to con UK OAPs out of millions of dollars.
The pair were apparently using the details of 54 dormant US companies to then encourage the pensioners (by using extremely high pressure sales methods) to buy shares in these companies.
Those pensioners that fell for the scam were instructed to electronically wire the funds from the UK to a bank account in the US.
Boiler room scams such as this have a relatively long history in the US, but the scale of fraud involved in this instance has shocked even the US investigative team. Covering a period from 2005 to date, Paul Gunter and daughter Zabiah were only caught when a small number of people in the UK informed the Police, who then liaised with US officials.
It is possible that now the scam has been discovered that some pensioners may get their money back as the Gunters assets have been frozen. Any recovered money will be slow to be returned though, as the pair will need to be prosecuted and convicted before the US Government will be able to actually seize the assets and then apportion the value amongst those who have been scammed.
