So Jaqui Smith (Home Secretary) has unveiled her plans for the UK ID cards. Apparently UK citizens will be able to choose whether they would rather have an ID card or a Biometric passport. Foreign nationals will be required to comply with this by the end of 2008 and UK
airport workers by the end of 2009. 2010 onwards anyone applying for a new passport will be given the option to get the ID card too.
I rarely buy into conspiracies (I make my own up - more fun), but I do find myself asking - why?
National ID cards are no more secure that the systems upon which they are based. Our government is not the most adept at computer systems (just ask the Inland Revenue), and yet we have a potentially huge database of biometric information in the making here.
To what end?
It certainly isn’t to protect us - ID cards will make not a jot of difference to that. It can’t help detect criminals unless it includes DNA profiling and we are being told that it will not, or fingerprints - which it will. So it is a national fingerprint database?
Well - no.
Because it would currently be against the law for information collected with one express purpose to be used for another purpose (Data Protection Act). So again I ask - why?
This blogger is not only confused, but more than a little concerned. I don’t understand it - the Government cannot explain it to my satisfaction, and yet there will soon be a law compelling me to comply with it.
The government tells us that it is a way for us to “prove that we are who we say we are”. Well, I am - and if the Inland Revenue can find me, and my friends believe me I am satisfied that I am indeed who I say that I am.
They should be to.
I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one? The E.U. constitution just got shoved down the throats of the British people, now national I.D. Just like Hitler.
Coming soon to the U.S.
Sadly I think that you are right - well I guess they’ll know where all the honest people are…
