Lord Goldsmith (ex Attorney General) appears to be trying to make sure that he stays in with HRH by calling for all kids to have to pledge
allegiance to the Queen prior to leaving school, and that there should be a National Holiday along the lines of Australia day.
Personally, I don’t have a particular difficulty with the concept of this.
I do doubt the motivations of Lord Goldsmith though.
This (in my opinion) has nothing to do with a UK identity. It has nothing to do with “bringing pride to Great Britain again”. It certainly is not (as Lord Goldsmith claimed on Radio 4):
Certainly there isn’t a crises of national identity, but the research does tend to show there’s been a diminution in national pride, in this sense of belonging
I am of the firm belief that this is all about one thing. Lord Goldsmith. Sadly then - any real debate or use that could come from this idea is completely undermined by the person suggesting it. He lacks credibility. He lacks good judgement.
No doubt HRH will be pleased though!
I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
