Seems like the government have had enough now. New rules will mean that any licenced premise that is caught selling alcohol to
underage people more than once will have their licence removed.
I am quite certain that there housing estates in the UK who will be thoroughly delighted when/if this legislation comes in.
Underage drinking has become such an issue in some areas that Police patrols have had to be increased simply to try and minimise the amount of vandalism and social disorder that is caused by drunken kids. Increasingly we are seeing reports of very young (12 and under) kids who are getting absolutely plastered with their mates on street corners and in parks.
Predictably much of the press is trying to draw a connection between this and the apparent failure of 24hr licensing to curb drink related crime. Honestly? There is no connection between these two issues. The relaxation of drinking times has had its’ challenges, but this is entirely unrelated to retail premises that serve youngsters.
We need to see this piece of legislation become law, and we need to protect our youngsters from drinking to excess.![]()
If we took the attitude that many of our continental cousins took then we simply would not have the binge culture that we do. In France, Spain, Italy etc children regularly have a watered down glass of wine with their meal when they are eating out with parents. The allure of alcohol is removed by its’ familiarity and so there is no the need to go and binge drink when legal, and there is no illicit pleasure in underage drinking. Problem solved.
I truly hate that I have to admit that Europeans have more of a clue than us Brits. But in this instance. They do.
I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
