So - ol’ Gordy is having a bit of bother with those uppity worker types…. No real surprise. I guess there is no real surprise in the fact that Blairs’ Beautiful People are still mourning the floppy haired ones’ departure and so have voted in a catastrophic (for Brown) way in regard to the Bill that was presented to the Commons. 147 votes in favour. 11 against (Brown is against).
So what is all the fuss about. Well - simply put there was a Bill presented to be considered as Law that gave similar rights to Agency staff as permanent workers. Things like holiday and sick pay entitlement. Now - personally, I cannot see how that is fair on the companies employing the Agency staff. The whole point of Agency staff is that the employer DOESN’T have to do those things. But ignoring that for a minute - here is the excerpt from the Reuters website:
Given the government’s lack of support it is unlikely to become law. Brown instead proposes a commission of unions, employers and government officials to look at the issue.
Hang on a sec’. “unlikely to become law”???
Now there has been an overwhelming vote in favour of this piece of legislation by the people that you and I put into those positions. Our MPs are voting on legislation with our mandate. They are paid by us to vote in best conscience over matters of state and thereby represent our wishes, or at least their opinion of what is best for us. With all that said the Government (ie Brown and his Cabinet) don’t want it and so it wont happen.
Ah - Democracy at work.
I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
