Favicons. Those funny little pictures that show next to the URL and the Bookmark (or favourite for you IE users!). They are a piece of cake to create (just do a google search for online favicon generator - there are loads of options), and on most webites they are dead easy to add. With WordPress I have to say that I summarily failed to make this work consistently - and then when I changed the theme to a new one I would have to recode the link.
Thankfully the MaxBlogPress plugin takes a whole lump of those problems away. Sure - if you change your theme you will still have to revisit the settings to make it appear again - but at least this is relatively painless (and it works every time!).
Usual drill to get this plugin up and running, and then you need to make a visit to settings > MBP Favicon
to get to the settings screen.
Once there you are presented with a series of very straightforward options.
The first is to decide where you are uploading your favicon from. There are three options.
- Favicon link is simply an existing link to the favicon
- Upload from your computer should be obvious (otherwise you should not be using WordPress!), BUT this MUST NOT be an icon file (which is annoying). It just uses any image file and will create a favicon from that image (which is useful)
- Or you can upload (steal?) from another web URL
There are a bunch of pre designed favicons that you can choose from and even some links to some other sites where you can get suitable images.
So - an easy to use way of getting favicons into your wordpress blog and your RSS feed (which is actually pretty difficult to achieve on your own so is a nice extra touch).
Recommended? Well - yes, but with some caution.
You see MaxBlogPress are great believers in the fact that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and you are forced to register in order to be able to enable this (or any of their other) plugin. This means putting in your name and email address to get access to the plugin loveliness behind that screen. Once you do this you are going to be receiving weekly emails with a load of junk in.
Not a huge issue - but it does reduce this plugins score from 8 out of 10 to:

I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
