Killer iPod?The Japanese are currently investigating incidents of the 2GB iPod Nano emitting sparks and setting fire to things!

It appears that when the 2GB iPod Nano (from Apple) is recharged a fault is causing it to emit sparks and cause the fire risk.

Japanese shops have sold in excess of 400 000 of these units and authorities are understandably concerned about the potential risk to life that the consumer product poses.

Japan has long been renowned for its voracious appetite for all things technological and this type of problem is one that could spell the death knell for a product where there is such avid competition for consumer spend.

he problem is compounded by the news emerging that Apple had been made aware of the problem early in January and failed to inform the Japanese authorities until this month. As such a high level of suspicion has fallen on Apple and what other information they may be withholding with regard to their range.

It is not clear if affected units have been sold outside of the Japanese region, but it is clear that in this day and age with Internet shopping and auction sites allowing product to easily cross borders that affected units could be in any region globally.

Apple will be keen to avoid the type of recall that cost Sony over $400 million when one of their notebooks had a similar issue.

I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
