GTA IV (Grand Theft Auto 4), the much anticipated sequel is predicted to have sales exceeding 9m units, and the expectation is that atGTA IV is much anticpated least 6m of these will be shipped in week one according to analysts Wedbush Morgan.

Despite endless criticism of its’ violence and apparent glamorisation of crime by rewarding behaviours in the game that would lead perpetrators to being put away for a long time in real life, the game series goes from strength to strength.

Arguably the best in the genre, the GTA series has evolved GTA IV Mapfrom its first ‘top down’ iteration to be a fully featured interactive game, that can easily stretch the most challenging of gaming platforms with high definition graphics.
As such the game is anticipated to earn Take-Two (the game authors) in the region of $450m.

Already the counterfeiters are trying to cash in on this release, with so called ‘pre-order’ copies being ordered in advance of next months’ release date.  Take-Two will not confirm whether they intend to move the release date to foil the copyright infringements, but industry commentators are convinced that it will be necessary.

EA Games have been linked to a possible purchase of Take-Two, and discussions appear to still be happening.  The key reason that Take-Two investors seem to be keen to progress such a merger is that EA have a reputation for making money out of all of their franchises, and Take-Two have alledgedly lost over $100m on titles such as Manhunt, BIGS, All-Pro Football, Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four.

Regardless of who owns the company at the end of next month, GTA fans who own the game are sure to be delighted.

I have run out of coffee - fancy buying me one?
