Genetic scientists have created a tiny creature that resembles a mythical dragon by combining the DNA from a bearded dragon lizard with the DNA structure of a bird.
The creature is no more than an inch or so long and the scientist even added smoke to the picture in their press release in order to build the drama.
It is believed that Taiwanese and Russian scientists collaborated on the project which is suspected to be the first purely ‘for profit’ piece of animal engineering that has been completed by these two nations together. Details are sketchy, but it would appear that both the Russian and Taiwanese governments spotted the financial potential for creating (and subsequently selling) these tiny ‘dragons’.
The adult size of the creature is predicted to be no more than 8inches long, with a diet similar to the bearded dragon. Currently patents are being sought by the scientists for the creature itself and the name ‘Dragon’ although it is unlikely that the word Dragon will actually be patented it is understood that this is just one of 78 names that have recently received trademark applications by the team who intend to have a universal ‘family’ name for the animal coupled with local names in the various countries that they anticipate selling it.
Orders are being taken for the ‘dragons’ now and deposits of $100 000 are reportedly flowing into the teams’ bank account, with the final price being $180 000.
Supplies of the ‘dragons’ are said to be limited to no more than 4 000 in the first year, so the total turnover from this little venture is likely to reach $720 000 000 in the first year. This turnover (if achieved) will make this the single most profitable piece of genetic engineering this decade.
